Review: Pizza Nova Plant Based Pepperoni

If you know me, you know I love pizza. It’s my favourite food. I could eat it all the time; it’s one of the best things in the world, hands down. So when Pizza Nova reached out and asked if I wanted to try their Plant Based Pepperoni the answer was obviously - YES. I have been eating Pizza Nova pizza my WHOLE LIFE. My best memories of elementary school are from pizza day having a delicious, cheesy, square slice of pizza with a little puddle of grease in every pepperoni (with a side of chips). Now it’s clear they wanted an expert opinion because, I also love my protein in all meat forms.

Now this Planteronni as I like to call it is a made from Field Roast, and is a “pea protein-based pepperoni alternative made with fresh whole food ingredients and spices.” and it does contain gluten.

So here is my honest review of what I thought.

The dEATS:
both pizzas well done, of course!

  • Aloha plant: classic tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, plant-based pepperoni, pineapple + added Spanish onion and parmigano cheese

  • Campo plant: classic tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, plant-based pepperoni, portobello mushrooms with sundried tomatoes and green olives instead of spinach

At first glance: woah, woah, woah, this is my dreams pizza. Topped with my favs I basically did a happy dance of excitement. The smell? Perfection. To say I was excited would be an under statement.

The pizza taste test: both pizza were DELICIOUS. The aloha had the contrast of sweet and salty, I love pineapples on my pizza (don’t even want to hear an argument otherwise), and the campo was super savoury with the sundried tomatoes/green olive/portobello mushrooms. Both were just delicious. 10/10.

The comparison: we ordered ANOTHER pizza (gluten free for my sister) with regular meat filled pepperoni so that we have a true pepperoni taste test. The meat pepperoni is a classic, and really can’t be beat. Just delicious, crispy, pepperoni goodness (see pic below, it’s the pepperoni on the left side). The planteronni is darker in colour, and does not crisp like the meat based one. At first taste I was shocked that it tastes pretty similar, after chewing I did notice that the after taste has more “spice” to it with hints of an Italian seasoning after taste. Obviously meat is #1 in my books, but this was a pretty close second (see pepperoni on the right).

Final verdict: because I eat meat I would order my pork pepperoni, with that being said I would definitely order planterroni again with my friends who don’t eat meat and enjoy my pizza hands down. I am so pleasantly surprised by how much I like it, kudos to Pizza Nova for their inclusivity. Now if only it didn’t have gluten then it would be a total winner in my books. But overall SUPER good!!!!!!
